Geraint Jones will make a return to international cricket in March after being called into the Papua New Guinea squad for Twenty20 World Cup qualifying.
The 35-year-old was born in the country in Oceania before moving to Australia. Jones, who last played for England more than five years ago, now has a chance to represent his country of birth after being named in the Hebou Barramundi’s provisional 18-man squad ahead of training camps in Australia.
They are attempting to reach the World Cup for the first time and will have to come through a tough qualifying tournament in Dubai to reach the final stages in Sri Lanka. Only two countries out of 16 will make it, with Rarua Dikana’s squad in a group with Afghanistan, Denmark, Nepal, Hong Kong alongside Canada, Netherlands and Bermuda, who have all appeared in previous World Cups.
