American health-regulators have approved Pfizer’s mood-disorder treatment Geodon for bipolar disorder in adults.
“The approval of Geodon provides an additional treatment option for patients with bipolar disorder who require maintenance therapy to keep the symptoms of the disease under control,” a Pfizer spokesman said.
The approval follows positive data from a six-month controlled trial in 240 patients evaluating the activity of the drug used alongside lithium or valproate.
Geodon was approved by the US drug-regulatory body in February 2001.
It is currently in use for the treatment of acute manic and mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder and for the treatment of schizophrenia.
The drug earned £175 million in worldwide sales for Pfizer in the third quarter, of which £160 million was from the US.
