Mixed fortunes for Ville ladies

It was a contrasting weekend for Cliftonville ladies, who managed an impressive 3-1 league win over Canterbury 3rds on Saturday, but were hammered 7-0 by Maidstone in the Kent Cup on Sunday.

Skipper Chris Russell put them ahead against Canterbury after a one-two with Hannah Kyle and though Canterbury equalised in the second half, Rachel Williams made it 2-1 after swapping passes with Jen Chapman.

Tracy Ballard scored a terrific third and Russell said: “It was another great result and I couldn’t ask more of my team.”

Sunday’s game however was far tougher.

Ville kept Maidstone at bay for much of the first half but eventually buckled.

“We showed our grit and determination,” Russell said. “Playing against a team from a much higher league we held our own for much of the first half, giving them a good run for their money and the defence kept their composure, coming under real pressure from quality opposition.”
