Margate's future is pink, says Apprentice hopeful

The Apprentice's Alan Sugar
Contestants on hit TV show The Apprentice want to rebrand Margate as a haven for the gay community on an upcoming episode.

One team of candidates came up with the idea of ditching the kiss-me-quick image in favour of launching the town as a gay resort.

The scheme is put forward by 24-year-old candidate Howard Ebbison.

The openly gay manager of ten pubs, trained dancer, musician and businessman from Derby is among the team members asked to give Margate a new identity.

However, team-mate Mona Lewis is said to take exception at the idea aimed at bringing more tourists to the coast, and speaks out against the plan.

Thomas Reeves, who runs the Flower Lab florist in Margate Old Town, is set to feature on the prime-time show.

He said: "That was one of the ideas they tried to pursue and it was really embarrassing. It was so dated and so wrong for Margate.”

The Thanet Pride event is held in Margate each summer and has become a big success, drawing thousands of spectators to the seafront to celebrate the occasion.

An estimated 5,000 people attended the event in 2007 and last year's event also drew big crowds.

Thomas added: "It certainly seemed to be based on what the BBC and their researchers thought about the potential Margate could have, but they made it look really naff and really 80s.

"They were basing a lot of their rebranding ideas on Pride because of the success of the events that have been held here so far.”

The episode will be screened in the coming weeks, possibly next Wednesday on BBC One at 9pm.

The cast and crew were in town in  October last year filming for the show in which one candidate wins a top job with business mogul Sir Alan Sugar.

Contestants were also seen at Quex Park in Birchington and in the areas around Margate High Street.
