Builder Darren gets church car park out of a mess

Darren Ellis and Father John Slater
They say heroes ride in to save the day on a white horse, but in Westgate this week it was more of a case of in a white van.

Builder Darren Ellis came to the aid of a local church after rogue traders made a mess of its car park.

The cowboy outfit dumped a load of sticky tar at the entrance to St Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Canterbury Road during the run-up to Easter.

The unwanted ‘work’ was done after church priest Father John Slater refused to accept the traders’ offer of a resurfaced car park – but they started anyway, leaving behind a terrible mess.

It meant that the church congregation was unable to use the car park at one of the church’s busiest times of year.

The news got round to Westgate builder Mr Ellis  and he offered to sort out the mess free of charge, delighting Father John and churchgoers.

The car park was repaired on Tuesday morning, when the black stuff was chiselled and separated from the original surface before being smoothed down again.

It is still popular, this sort of con, even though advice on what to do and NOT DO is out there, it still isn't reaching everyone, the elderly in particular.
We have 15 such reports here: http://www.yourlocaltrades.co.uk/page.php?pg=112
But something that will be useful, "How to spot a rogue Trader" and is a MUST read, can be found here: http://www.yourlocaltrades.co.uk/How-To-Spot-A-Rogue-Trader_14.html
If you are going to use a tradesperson, have you any idea on the Do's and Don'ts?
