Asylum costs could mean extra council tax hike

Cllr Paul Carter
Government reluctance to help Kent County Council pay for bills caused by asylum seekers could mean an extra hike in council tax bills.

Tory-run County Hall wants to increase April’s bills by 1.86 per cent, but is currently budgeting for an additional 0.71 per cent hike for asylum costs.

KCC says the Government has yet to make it clear if Whitehall will cough up, and council leader Cllr Paul Carter is in direct discussions with Minister for Borders and Immigration Phil Woolas over the issue.

Cllr Carter said: “Asylum is a national issue and we believe it is morally right that these costs are met nationally and not by Kent.”

A decision is expected by February 18.

Here we go again, due to the council not spending our money in the proper places they now have a short fall to recoupe and again its us who suffer.
Iam a married person with no children, both me and my wife are in low income jobs and we struggle to keep on top of all the bills,so how is it that all the asylum seekers have designer cloths and better cars than we can afford, something needs to be done to regulate the money they receive and the people of kent need to make a stand and refuse to pay.

I am not rasist in anyway or form but I refuse to pay an increase in my council tax to pay for someone that come here and sponge of our country. I work hard but due to personal reasons, my wife has had to give up work. I get no help what so ever. I still have to pay all the bills withotu her income yet is I were from a different country, I would have it on a plate.
I think the people of Dover, deal and surrounding areas should put there foot down now before its too late.

It is dangerous for Paul Carter to use such an excuse through fear of stirring up hatred for people who have moved here through persecution in their own country.

Perhaps he can enlighten us on the actual cost and we can then compare that against the £50,000,000 squandered by his own finance officers in foolish Icelandic investments?
